Setting up a weight belt for spearfishing

Why a rubber belt

As you descend, your wetsuit compresses and a nylon belt goes loose and slides around. A rubber Marseillaise belt stretches when you put it on and contracts with the suit, so the weights stay in place. The Rob Allen Marseillese belt uses a roller buckle for smooth tightening, and its pin flips to 90 degrees on release for fast ditching.

Weights and distribution

Spread weights evenly around the hips so you stay level in the water. The 650 g Drop weight is pure lead with a D-shape and quick-release strap; the 800 g D-Weight slips on from the side for fine adjustments. See all options in Weights. A crotch strap stops the belt sliding up when you dive head-down.

Safety

Practise releasing the belt with one hand, and keep the buckle clear of other gear. Belts are in Weight Belt; D-rings and clips are in Weight & Weight Belt Spares.

FAQ

How much weight do I need?
It depends on suit thickness, body composition and water salinity. Start conservatively and adjust in small steps during a buoyancy check with full kit.

Does the belt fit standard weights?
The Marseillaise belt works with standard diving weights and weight pockets.

What is the crotch strap for?
It links the belt to the back of the suit so the belt cannot slide up your body when you dive head-first.
