How to choose a Rob Allen speargun shaft

Diameter and band power

The shaft must match the energy of the bands. Thin 6.6 mm shafts suit single 16 mm band guns such as the Kawa and Sparid. 7 mm shafts pair with twin 14 mm bands on guns like the Mahi and Snapper Railgun. 7.5 mm shafts are recommended with 2 x 16 mm bands or triple-band setups, and 8 mm shafts match powerful guns such as the Havoc Timberline with three 14 mm bands. Too thin a shaft for the power will flex; too heavy a shaft for the bands loses range.

Attachment type

Check how your bands connect. Notched shafts (single or double notch, DN) take wishbones in cut notches; double-pin (DP) and triple-pin (3P) shafts have raised pins and are listed for Euro mechanism guns. The Impact 7 mm uses a double-wire (DW) setup. Shafts of 1.7–1.8 m in the 7.5 and 8 mm ranges carry three notches instead of two.

Length and barbs

Rob Allen pairs a 100 cm gun with a 1.4 m shaft and a 140 cm gun with a 1.8 m shaft. A single flopper is lighter and easier to remove from fish; double barbs give more holding power on big, strong fish. Browse matching guns in Spearguns.
