Helpful guides
Carbon barrels are lighter and stiffer than aluminium, which helps the gun swing quickly and stay steady on aim.
Choosing a carbon speargun
Pure carbon or Timberline
Rob Allen uses carbon in two ways. Models such as the GT Carbon Railgun (pullwound carbon fibre), Kawa, Mahi and BlueFin Pro have a carbon barrel on its own. The Timberline family – Havoc Timberline, Timberline Roller and Chaos Timberline – wraps a carbon core in mahogany. The wood adds mass and buoyancy; the Havoc Timberline is listed as neutrally buoyant, which helps the gun sit level in the hand.
Railgun or rollergun in carbon
Carbon railguns run from the single-band Kawa (6.6 mm shaft) to the triple-band BlueFin Pro (7.5 mm triple-fin shaft). The carbon roller options are the GT Carbon Roller, Timberline Roller, BlueFin Pro Double and Chaos Timberline Double, covered in detail under Rollerguns. Choose a roller if you want maximum power from a shorter gun.
Looking after a carbon barrel
Carbon resists flex well but does not like sharp knocks on rock or metal. Rinse the gun in fresh water, keep it out of strong sun when stored, and transport it in a padded speargun bag from Bags & Cases.
FAQ
Is carbon stronger than aluminium?
Carbon is stiffer and lighter, while aluminium is more tolerant of hard knocks. Compare the aluminium range if you dive rough rocky ground.
Do carbon spearguns float?
It depends on the model. Timberline guns use mahogany to add buoyancy; check each product page for its stated buoyancy.
Which carbon gun suits reef hunting?
The single-band Kawa Carbon and twin-band Mahi Carbon are aimed at reef and general hunting and come in lengths from 50 cm (Kawa) and 70 cm (Mahi).
